Annual Report 2019
RAK (Random Act of Kindness) Card Ministry
This ministry, started August 23, 2011, is an effort to reach out to the Weedsport community at a time of family stress letting people know we Presbyterians are alive, active and care. While it is hopeful if/when these families are searching for a church, they would remember us, this is not the overall objective. In many cases, we can assume they have their own church relationship and we are supporting the fact that Jesus loves them and so do we.
Stress, is defined primarily as death, major/terminal illness and disaster such as fire or some other type of emergency. Ironically, all this year’s cards are prompted by death. Anything other than death is known by me only if someone communicates it to me as general publications only report obituaries. Family is identified as any family member (parents, grand parents, spouse, children, siblings) with a Weedsport address and not a member of our church as we have programs, supported by our Deacons, to reach out and support our own members.
In 2019 we sent 71 cards (a decrease of 22 over 2018), of which all were death related. Overall, since inception, a total of 821 cards have been sent. Over the seven years since inception, we have averaged 103 cards annually.
While nearly all obituaries identify survivors, often their addresses are not publicized as people opt to not disclose them. With the continued growth of cell phone usage and no land lines, it is also more difficult to find people via the internet without subscribing to a database. This has caused a reduction of cards being sent since inception of the mission. The first three years of this mission we averaged 117 cards each year and the last three years we have averaged 84. As it is difficult for me, living in Cicero, to be aware of major illnesses and local emergencies, I could use some help with timely communicating the need. When you are aware of these types of family emergencies in the Weedsport mailing area, please forward the information to me at 315-699-4160 or e-mail at WSMITH1@TWCNY.RR.COM. Don’t assume I know or that someone else has made me aware of these situations. Better to over communicate than not be aware at all.
Thanks to James Marshall and the Marshall Companies for supplying the cards, at no cost, through one of their vendors, with postage being donated privately for this mission
