There were 20 students enrolled in the Children’s Sunday School. The curriculum for this year was Cokesbury’s One Room Sunday School “Deep Blue.” Winter (January – February) themes: Jesus’ Ministry Begins and Jesus Calls Helpers. For the Spring (March-May): Jesus Lives!, Believe, and God News Spreads. For the Fall (September-November) Joseph’s Journey, Freedom, and God Provides. Then for December: The Stories of Christmas.
In January the children began a food drive. Just as Jesus chose to do God’s work. The children chose to do God’s work and help people. The food items were to be given to the food pantry. This project culminated on Souper Bowl Sunday by adding the items collected to the church’s Super Bowl Drive.
Easter Egg Hunt was held March 20th. This was a community event. Resurrection eggs were part of the egg hunt. The congregation was asked to donate candy for the eggs and cookies. Approximately 33 children participated.
Students also participated in One Great Hour of Sharing.
Children’s Day held May 22nd with a picnic that followed. The students wrote “Dear Mary” letters or just raised their hand to ask Mary questions they had. The children’s music DVD was also used to share some of the music videos they use in class.
June – July:
School supply mission with congregation in conjunction with the Weedsport Good Samaritan Fund. Over the summer the children and adults gathered school supplies to donate to the school in September. The school was able to provide us with a specific list of supplies that were most needed.
VanderKamp: Camperships were awarded to all thanks to the generosity of our church. Spring Rummage sale proceeds went to campership. Several of our children attended: David Seitz (Sports Camp), Jenna and Alison Grudzien, Sophia Gwinn, Grace and Meagan Fatcheric (Outrageous Camp). David Seitz attended two more VanderKamp sessions.
VBS was an ecumenical event. The Methodist, Baptist, Sennett Federated, and Presbyterian churches joined forces to present “Surf Shack,” held June 26th through June 30th at the United Methodist Church. A surf theme decorated horse drawn wagon was used in the Firemen’s Field Days parade to carry our children and adults to advertise our upcoming VBS event. See separate VBS report.
August: Youth attended a special screening of “Remember the Goal.”
September: Kicked off the start of school and Sunday School with a backpack blessing in church.
The CROP Walk was in October. Our church members and children participated once again.
The children joined UNICEF’s Trick or Treat for Halloween program. ($33.19)
The Sunday School children and the preschool students were given “Look Around the Manger,” an Advent activity.
Held December 11. Over 45 children and adults of our congregation worked together to perform “Twas the Light Before Christmas.” This delightful, instant Christmas play delivered the true message of Christmas in a clever and meaningful way! In this all-in-one fun-filled night participants of all ages created props, rehearse their parts, experienced an impactful devotion, and present a full-fledged Christmas production. We had Census Takers with their abacuses, Inn Keepers with IN/OUT signs, Star Trackers with snazzy jeweled star glasses, and angels with tambourines all grooving to a special song that went with each of their parts of the play. Laura Granger playing the part of Vanessa and Dan Bates playing the part of Ray entertained us with a humorous play during which each of the groups joined in when their “part” was needed. A dish-to-pass lunch followed. All was held in our freshly painted dining hall.
Baptisms: The CE committee continues to send monthly Splash newsletters to children who have been baptized in our church but cannot attend our church/Sunday School. For the older children the monthly Pockets magazine subscription has been sent.
Confirmation class – A new class will begin February 2017.
Youth Group: Some activities the youth were involved in was crafts, a trip to the zoo, grilled their own pizzas, attending a special screening of “Remember the Goal,” and decorated pumpkins.
Protecting Children: Annual review of our Child Protection policy was completed.
Adult Bible Study: Dan Thomas continues to hold this class on Sundays before church service. It is always an insightful class as Dan shares interesting background information followed by a class discussion based on the scripture lessons of the day’s sermon.
Thanks to the support of the church, a wonderful committee and creative, hardworking teachers, the Christian Education Committee has been blessed with another year of sharing the good news with the children of our church and community.
